When does whale season occur in Maui?

The best time to visit Maui for whale watching is typically from mid-December through mid-April, when thousands of humpback whales migrate from the cold feeding waters of Alaska to the warm waters around the Hawaiian Islands to breed, give birth, and nurse their calves. Peak whale activity usually occurs in January and February, when sightings are most frequent. After the winter breeding season ends, the whales begin their long migration back north to Alaska in late March and April, where they spend the summer feeding.

Many visitors enjoy whale watching tours, but whales can also be seen from many points along Maui’s coastline. Our condo is located across from Kamaole Beach Park II in Kihei, where guests often spot whales breaching or spouting in the distance. For the safety and protection of these incredible animals, whales should always be observed from afar. Federal guidelines require boats and swimmers to keep at least 100 yards away from humpback whales, allowing them to move freely without disturbance.

Whales can be spotted throughout the day, but sightings are often best in the morning when ocean conditions are calmer and visibility is clearer. That said, whales are active at all hours, so it’s possible to see them anytime during daylight. Many of our guests enjoy relaxing on the lanai and watching for distant whale spouts or tail slaps while taking in the beautiful Maui ocean views. Binoculars are provided to enhance the viewing experience and make it easier to spot these majestic creatures offshore. 🐋
